My book will tell you about my life long struggle with being overweight. I have succeeded at weight control using the Before, During and After approach. I lost 70 pounds the first 7 months of practicing Before, During and After. During those 7 months I enjoyed food more than I ever had my entire life!
When Blake Sylvia began a diet a little over a year ago, he had no idea he'd be authoring a book on the subject. Seven months later, he'd lost 70 pounds and wanted to share his secret with others struggling with weight control.
With a history of obesity and high cholesterol, he knew he had to do something, if not for himself - to set an example for his children. "My whole life I've struggled with weight control," Sylvia said. "I felt like I should be able to control it … exercise, eating... I tried fad dieting... low carb, low fat, low cal... and they all inevitably failed."
The Old River resident began his quest for weight loss in February 2005 with a water-based diet he developed; an idea he says may have even been divine intervention.
"A thought just popped into my mind and I started on that very day," he said. "I began noticing that I wasn't as hungry... I had more energy and I felt better. "It wasn't long before I noticed my clothes were fitting better and I began exercising." Sylvia said the best part of his diet is that he still gets to enjoy the food he always has and still eats what he wants.
This structured approach to simply drinking water has a built-in portion control mechanism, according to Sylvia. "I can't say for certain, but I've heard that our body mistakes thirst for hunger. If you properly hydrate your body, the hunger goes away," Blake said. "I'm never hungry. That's the honest truth." Sylvia said that as soon as people start succeeding at the diet and they notice positive changes, they're apt to begin exercising.
"I'm just offering people hope that there's a way to get healthy and not be fat forever," he said.
In total, Sylvia has dropped 72 pounds and his cholesterol has gone from 230 to 158, but the pictures tell 1,000 words. The book, "Before, During, and After: An Exciting New Approach to Weight Control" was self-published in September 2005 has sold more than 220 copies. Sylvia's "Before, During and After" approach to weight loss has yielded plenty of local success stories, many of whom say that the diet's key ingredient, water, makes it so easy to follow.
Dana Garcia said the results of the program were almost instantaneous.
"I read the book front to back and did it right away," she said. "I started feeling better and I realized how easy it was to do. Garcia, a Mont Belvieu resident and Special Education Aid for fifth- and sixth-graders said the diet also helped her increase her energy and eliminated debilitating migraine headaches she has suffered with for years.
Another Mont Belvieu resident, Greg Eppler, has lost 24 pounds in three months on the "Before, During and After" plan and he says it's been fairly simple. "I haven't changed anything I eat. I still go out and eat, I just don't eat as much," he said. Eppler, who began at 315 pounds, has set a goal of 220 for himself.
Charla Malek of Beach City said the plan is so simple because water is available everywhere. "No one knows you're on a diet. There are no counting points or weighing food. It's just water," she said. "That's everywhere."
