Canadian, Mexican Hazmat Screening Set
email this pageprint this pageemail usAssociated Press

Truck drivers carrying hazardous materials from Canada and Mexico will begin Monday undergoing government background investigations before they can enter the United States.

Truck drivers with U.S. licenses to carry hazardous materials are already required to be checked by the Transportation Security Administration.

A law passed a year ago requires drivers licensed in Canada and Mexico to submit to scrutiny similar to what U.S. truck drivers undergo.

The TSA said Tuesday it will require Canadian and Mexican truckers to enroll in a Customs program called "Free and Secure Trade," or FAST.

FAST allows truckers who have been through a series of background checks and registrations to clear Customs faster on the northern and southern borders.
