Mexico Debates Indigenous Issues
Prensa Latina
Mexico City - The Mexican Congress paid special attention to indigenous issues in recent days, when the two houses committees in charge of dealing with aboriginal problems held a joint conference.
The main objective was to analyze several bills in favor of the country s ethnic groups, including an eight-item project, which was discussed behind closed doors with the participation of indigenous leaders only.
They agreed to create a common agenda to solve pending problems and commit to improving living conditions of the indigenous communities.
The president of the Senate's committee, Andres Galvan, proposed the first week of August as a deadline, and called all groups in the two houses to include indigenous issues in the National Development Plan.
The meeting agreed to include an initiative to approve the Law of the Consultation System for Indigenous Peoples and Communities, as well as reforms to several articles of the Constitution and the Federal Code of Election Procedures to guarantee that all ethnic communities be represented at the Congress of the Union.
The lawmakers also decided to set up a subcommittee on community media to allow the indigenous peoples to acquire, operate and administer the media. |
