Lopez Obrador Slams Mexican Media Control Prensa Latina
| Manuel Lopez Obrador | Mexican opposition leader Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized the supercontrol exerted by his country's media, and called to democratize television, radio and the press.
The former presidential candidate for the coalition headed by the PRD (Democratic Revolution Party) said during a tour of the southern state of Oaxaca that Mexican media only favors the rich minorities.
In statements to local radio, Lopez Obrador called the Supreme Court of Justice to declare the so-called Televisa Act, which he described as monopolistic and aimed at controlling information, unconstitutional.
He wondered whether the Supreme Court's ministers will be willing to reject the government's demands not to make substantial amendments to the media act.
Lopez Obrador charged that the controversial legislation, approved on March 31, 2006, during the election campaign, was manipulated by then President Vicente Fox with support from the then candidate for the PAN (National Action Party), Felipe Calderon. |
