A group of young Canadians visiting Cuba in solidarity with the island, expressed their commitment to redouble efforts to have the U.S. government release the Five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who have been unfairly imprisoned in that country since 1998.

In statements to Prensa Latina news agency, the coordinator of the Vancouver committee for the freedom of the Five, Noah Fine, said the organization will continue to demand the release from jail of the Cuban men, as they have been doing in front of the U.S. consulate in Vancouver every month.

The activist said the committee is leading a campaign to spread the truth about the irregularities committed during the trial against Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramon Labañino, internationally known as The Cuban Five.

These men are serving harsh sentences in U.S. jails for reporting to the Cuban government on violent plans organized and carried out by Miami-based extreme right groups against the Cuban people.

According to Fine, activities in favor of the Five's cause include talks about the case in coordination with labor unions and student organizations. He also announced the holding of a national conference on the issue in which U.S. solidarity-with-Cuba groups are expected to participate. The meeting is slated for November this year.

A member of the executive board of the Solidarity-with-Cuba Network in Vancouver, Tamara Hansen, said the legal process held against the Cuban Five was unjust. She condemned the U.S. policy, which she said was based on double standards, referring to Washington's so-called war against terrorism.
