(AFP/Yoshikazu Tsuno) | The Japanese government donated 505,000 U.S. dollars to Mexico to fight climate change, one of the Kyoto Protocol (1997) commitments, the Mexican Agriculture Ministry announced on Sunday.
Mexican Agriculture Ministry said the fund will be invested in renewable energy projects used in the countryside's productive process.
The Kyoto Protocol, which took effect in 2005, intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels over 2008-2012.
Michael Carrol, head of the World Bank's Use of Renewable Energy in Productive Applications, made the donation announcement during a meeting held at Mexico's Shared Risk Trust Fund (FIRCO).
FIRCO's head Rodrigo Diez de Sollano said the money will strengthen the Renewable Energy Project for Agriculture (Pera), which went into effect in 2004 to help promote renewable energies in the countryside.
