Karl Rove Resigning, Uses Classic Copout as Reason for Leaving White House

Rove resigns, perhaps in strategizing what role he could best serve in advising the next GOP presidential candidate for the good of the Republican party.
Washington - Top White House aide Karl Rove is resigning his position at the White House. Rove used an interview with the WSJ as a way to get the word out on the street that he was resigning as of August 31st, citing family as his reason.

Rove has been the man behind the scene for President Bush ever since he was governor of Texas and after two terms in the White House, all of a sudden Rove says his family needs him - in what appears to be a classic copout t - rats won't go down with the ship. Or in Rove's case, he doesn't want to sink himself should Congress press the Bush advisor to testify.

There could be more to the story in Rove's decision to resign in that he might be looking to be the man behind the scene for Fred Thompson in the up coming presidential primary - should Thompson run for the Oval Office. Or perhaps it's one of the other top GOP presidential candidates that needs a good strategist behind their campaign if the GOP itself plans on rallying enough voter support to keep a Republican in the White House in 2008. After all, the Republican party itself appears to view Rove as "GOP property" and it might be a decision was made "for the good of the party" for Rove to detach himself from the Bush White House in his advisory role.

Why all the hoopla over Rove? Well, in the WSJ interview published this morning, Rove even said that he was thinking of resigning last year but decided to stay "for the good of the Party" after the GOP lost the crucial midterm elections last fall.

This morning White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters, "He’s [Rove] been talking with the president [about leaving] for a long time - about a year, regarding when might be good to go."

Perino said it was "big projects" that kept him on board, though what the Bush spokeswoman meant by "big" was left up in the air for journalists imaginations to ponder.

Rove had said in a prior WSJ editorial, a sweet media spot for the Bush White House [a NY Times story snubbed the Journal over that], that he had no intentions of becoming involved in the 2008 presidential elections, though he said the midterm elections were nothing more than a "temporary setback" and that he believed the Republican party would prevail and win the White House in 2008.

Doesn't it strike you oddly that Rove would say on hand that he was sticking around 'because' of the GOP loosing the midterm elections and they say he doesn't plan on being involved in the presidential race in 2008? What was Rove planning to do, sit around Texas and mow the lawn? That's not the GOP advisor we've all come to know!

From my take, a master puppeteer like Karl Rove doesn't up and leave a top GOP advisory role in the White House just when President Bush needs him the most and say he's "doing it for his family's sake." That's a copout. I believe Rove is planning his next strategic move and most likely its coming in the form of an arms length advisory capacity using the great whitewash title - consultant - where for the right coin Rove will advise Fred Thompson in his presidential race when he gets around to announcing that he's running - as Newt Gingrich has been doing - another top "GOP advisor".
