Mexico Increases Airport Inspection To Prevent Foot-and-Mouth Maja Wallengren - Dow Jones go to original
| | Special checkpoints have been set up at the airports in Mexico City and the tourist centers of Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. - Agriculture Ministry | | | Mexico City - Mexico on Thursday said it had increased inspections at key airports in the country to ensure that no strain of the infectious foot-and-mouth disease would enter its borders following an outbreak in southern England.
The Agriculture Ministry said it had set up special checkpoints at the airports in Mexico City and the tourist centers of Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, with special attention given to passengers arriving on direct flights from the United Kingdom.
It said sanitation authorities had implemented a particular "thorough inspection of all the persons" that arrive on any of the 24 weekly flights from Glasgow and Manchester, which involves passing through a special mat with disinfectant, while all bags were inspected for meat products.
The Mexican action comes as restrictions on movement of livestock across borders within Britain started to ease in the wake of the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease on two different farms in southern England last week.
Mexico, which maintains strict sanitary investigations at most airport and overland borders, earlier this week joined the U.S., European Union and China in an import ban on British beef and livestock products in response to the outbreak.
Britain has voluntarily suspended exports of livestock, meat and milk products in response to the outbreak and said Wednesday there was a low risk of the disease spreading outside the immediate outbreak area. |
