Mexico City - The number of suicides for economic reasons among Mexican youngsters has increased four fold in the last 15 years, a study by the National Statistics, Geography and Computing Institute (INEGI), released by Mexican press, revealed on Saturday.
According to the report, most suicides have been reported in the states of Tabasco, Guanajuato, Coahuila, the Federal District and Chihuahua.
Suicides represent a health care problem, as it is the second killer in the Mexican population, aged from 15-24, INEGI said.
According to reports, the number of attempts is 70 times higher than those which really take place.
From 1990 to 2006, the number of such events increased from 406 to 1,055.
In order to reduce such practices, the Mexican Institute of Youth announced the implementation of a plan to promote prevention of violence.
Director of the Mexican Institute of Youth Isabel Priscila Vera said the country lacks a State policy oriented to the youngsters, affected by widespread suicidal feelings, discourage, social isolation, undesired pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. |
