Mexico City, Mexico - With its goal to eliminate violence against women in 2008, the Mexican government will spend 43.4 billion pesos (3.95 billion U.S. dollars) said the National Women's Agency (Inmujeres) on Tuesday.

The president of Inmujeres Rocio Garcia Gaytan said that it is the largest expenditure the government has to stop the violence against women.

Inequalities in power relations in Mexican culture caused the violence against women, which is hard to stop. She said that extra efforts should be done to protect the women and political will must be instilled to civil servants and the people.

Gaytan acknowledged the improvement in gender equality within the decade when more victims have stepped forward to report the violence.
