Editorials | Environmental | November 2007  San Francisco Oil Spill Spreads Reuters Less than a week after a massive oil spill in San Francisco, more than a dozen nearby beaches have been contaminated. Officials say about 200 birds have already died, while 465 oil-covered birds are being cleaned and rehabilitated. The National Transportation Safety Board is now on the scene investigating the spill.
