In a speech at a meeting with women at the presidential palace, Calderon said the figure was a historical record and marked a 60 percent increase over 2007's figure. The money will be used to assist programs which aim to raise consciousness about gender equality.
Calderon said, more than 30 million Mexican women suffered some type of violence last year, while more than 80 percent of the women who were murdered were killed in their own homes.
Earlier this year, Mexico enacted a law obligating federals and local authorities to prevent, punish and eradicate violence against women, he said. Yet only a handful of states have formally adopted it.
"I feel pain and anger that the place where women should be safest is where they suffer the worst aggression," Calderon said.
In Ciudad Juarez, a city on Mexico's northern border with the United States, 380 women were murdered between 1993 and 2006, according to authorities.
