Mexican Judge May Rule on Legality of Case Against Jailed Canadian Woman Canwest News Service go to original
Guadalajara, Mexico A Mexican federal judge will rule Friday on the constitutional legalities in the case against a Canadian woman who has been jailed in Guadalajara for two years without trial, according to an embassy official.
Today is the legal deadline for a federal judge to rule on he constitution challenge that has been launched on her behalf, said Rodolfo Diaz, a spokesman for the Mexican embassy in Canada. Her lawyer is asking that the federal judge determines if there are any constitutional irregularities of this case.
Brenda Martin, 51, has been jailed since 2006 by Mexican authorities for money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
The Trenton, Ont., native worked for 10 months as a chef in Puerto Vallarta.
Mexican authorities accuse Martin of helping her employer, an Edmonton man, defraud $60 million from 15,000 victims worldwide through an Internet investment scam.
Alyn Waage, Martins former employer, pleaded guilty in 2003 and is serving a 10-year sentence in the United States. He had said in a sworn affidavit that Martin had nothing to do with the scheme.
Diaz said that the embassy is remaining in contact with local authorities but could not say when the ruling will take place.
We are of course trying to maintain contact with local authorities on the status of this case but as you know, the trial is under the jurisdiction of Mexico, he said. Were dependent on the Mexican government for details. |
