Mexico Media: NAFTA Harms Workers
Prensa Latina go to original
Mexico City - The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has only benefited a handful of agricultural exporters and impoverished the countryside, the Mexican newspaper "La Jornada" reported Tuesday.
The daily states that the current meeting of presidents from the United States, Mexico and Canada in New Orleans claims to defend that accord, which has been a target of attacks in the political, social and economic fields.
Referring to Mexico, the publication notes that the social costs caused by NAFTA increased this year with the implementation of its agricultural area and the suppression of tariffs to import over 1,000 agricultural products.
That has made the situation of tens of thousand poor farmers more distressing and affects other sectors of society, the article points out.
The Free Trade Agreements are instruments aimed at benefiting large capital, damaging workers and small business. They favor a few multinational companies to the detriment of the industrial development of our countries, the text states. |
