 | | Twenty billion dollars have been invested to help rural zones in Mexico. These are essential mechanisms that will help reduce world poverty. - President Felipe Calderón | | | | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declared that as a result of the increase in food prices, the government has launched an aggressive policy to increase food production in the Mexican countryside.
During a joint press conference with Angela Merkel, the President declared that a $20 billion peso investment has been created to support the country's rural zones.
"My government will not stand idly by during this problem but multiply and intensify the actions to help the poorest population in Mexico to cope with this sudden price increase," he said.
The President of Mexico explained that his administration is working to prevent the increase in food and energy prices from having an impact on people's economy.
"During the first quarter of the year, the Mexican government spent five billion dollars helping or subsidizing the prices of fuel to prevent this year’s sudden price increase from having repercussions on the poorest households."
He went on to say that governments worldwide should work to increase food production and level the playing field on the international market.
"We need mechanisms to relieve poverty throughout the world, because this increase has an impact on the poorest people, who spend the largest portion of their incomes on food," he explained.
He pointed out that his social policy strategy “Living Better” will enable the Federal Administration to attend the poorest communities in Mexico and provide technological support and investment for agricultural producers. |
