President Felipe Calderón presented the Program to Clean Up Acapulco Bay 2008-2011.

Acapulco, Guerrero - The aim is to improve the quality of life of both the inhabitants of Guerrero and local and foreign tourists.

The program will prevent health risks and the pollution of beach waters.

President Felipe Calderón presented the Program to Clean Up Acapulco Bay 2008-2011, designed to provide all the inhabitants of this tourist resort with safe drinking water and to ensure clean beaches and rivers for domestic and foreign visitors.

Accompanied by Governor of Guerrero Zeferino Torreblanca and Mayor of Acapulco, Félix Salgado Macedonio, the President stated that in order to live better, sufficient, good quality water should be provided, especially for the poorest sectors.

President Calderón highlighted the importance of proper wastewater treatment to prevent it from polluting the sea and jeopardizing the ecological and tourist wealth of Mexican ports, in this case, Acapulco.

The Program for Cleaning up Acapulco Bay, which will have a total investment of nearly $730 million pesos, will consist of five basic points:

First: ensure sufficient water for the low-income neighborhoods in the Port of Acapulco as regards both quantity and quality.

Second: improve the drainage system to prevent wastewater from reaching the bay.

Third: ensure 100% wastewater treatment.

Fourth. restructure the Municipal Water Commission to satisfy citizens’ demands and thereby ensure proper wastewater treatment.

Fifth: Emphasize environmental care to combat climate change.

Lastly, President Calderón exhorted both the public and social sectors in Acapulco to adopt a responsibility attitude towards water use and management to restore Acapulco to its former splendor and turn it into a world-class tourist resort once again.
