Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza in Mexico City, May 8, 2008:

I am deeply saddened by the murder of Edgar Millan Gomez, General Coordinator for Regional Security at the Mexican Secretariat of Public Security. Struck down by criminals in the prime of his life, Mr. Millan epitomized the highest professional standards and a long commitment to public service.

American law enforcement officers have worked closely with Mr. Millan and his colleagues over the past years, to build a strong and effective bilateral relationship in which together we fight the organized crime wave that would poison our children and tear apart our communities.

Mexico has lost another hero. Another death which brings outrage to all who admire and respect the thousands of selfless officials who dedicate their lives to the betterment of their country. Another death that will certainly inspire an even deeper commitment by those brave men and women, on both sides of the border, who continue to confront the criminal cartels.

In addition to today's murder, Mexico has recently lost many other law enforcement officials in a brutal series of killings. Over the past four days in Washington, I have spoken with President Bush, members of , Senators and officials in the executive branch, sharing personally with the leadership of both parties the countless stories of bravery by Mexican officials against organized crime. I urged our elected officials to approve the Merida Initiative, which I believe is a critical element for enhancing our joint fight against these criminals.

On behalf of the entire U.S. Embassy family in Mexico, I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Millan's family, to the families of all other slain Mexican officials, and to their colleagues and friends.
