Nothing Good to Say About Mexico Paul Goettler - The Leader-Post go to original
I would like to make a comment with regard to the article, "Ottawa mum about Canadian injured in Mexico" that appeared in the Leader-Post on May 20.
It is appalling that the number of people listed have run into problems, and others have been arrested, etc., in Mexico in recent months. The list did not include Brenda Martin, the woman who was arrested a couple of years ago and ended up spending two years in a Mexican prison without being charged. Thankfully, negotiations between our government and the Mexicans resulted in her finally being sent to back to Canada. She was granted parole and is now with her mother. There may be other Canadians who might have met similar fates who we have not yet heard about.
I visited Mexico (Cancun and Cozumel) back in 1998 and although these places were very nice, I had a concern with regard to the military presence and the abject poverty. The beaches on the "7" in Cancun were wonderful, but move back a few miles from the beaches into the towns, and they were different places.
I met a woman who was born in Mexico some years ago and had immigrated to Canada. She told me not to go to Mexico City. Despite the historic sites in the city, she suggested that the city was not somewhere that Canadians should visit (crime and poverty).
During my time in Cancun and Cozumel, I found it difficult to deal with - especially the people who wanted us to buy into "time sharing". After spending a couple of hours with two or three people, the last of whom was recovering from a hangover from the night before, I finally made him realize what the word "no" meant.
Based on the problems that Canadians have had with the Mexicans, I would like to suggest that we boycott Mexico. I suggest that, if Canadians want a place in the sun, they consider (and, especially, given the dollar) and go to Florida, California, Texas, Arizona or New Mexico. I am also sending this message to my MP, asking him to forward it to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
I know people who have gone to Cuba or some of the countries in Central America - and have had no problems with respect to money or getting into these countries. |
