Zaragoza, Spain: Mexican President Felipe Calderón called for urgent measures to be taken to guarantee environmental balance, and the supply of and equal access to water worldwide.

During his address at Expo-Zaragoza 2008, he warned that the vulnerability of water could, if we do not act now, become a factor that could create more poverty and greater famine throughout the world, which is currently being exacerbated by shortages and price rises.

On Mexico Day, celebrated today as part of the Expo, President Felipe Calderón, accompanied by Vice-President of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, also inaugurated the Mexico Pavillion, in a festive atmosphere enlivened by a group of mariachis, who entertained the Spaniards who had gathered to watch them.

During his address at Expo-Zaragoza 2008, the Mexican president said that “Mexico urges all nations and all men and women of good will to redouble their efforts to defend water.”

In view of the challenges in the internacional context regarding this issue, President Calderón suggested four proposals:

The vulnerability of water could become a factor that could create more poverty.

First, that the preservation of water, forests and the environment should be regarded as a basic objective of national agendas and development plans.

Second, that programs combining the economic and technical resources of all sectors should be institutionalized to maximize investments in water.

Third, that given the shortage of water in various regions, its efficient use, treatment and re-use is required in the various productive activities.

And fourth, he proponed reinforcing early warning systems and the creation of a rapid international assistance system to cope with disasters.

After his address, President Felipe Calderón toured the Mexico Pavillion at Expo-Zaragoza 2008, accompanied by his wife Margarita Zavala and his staff.
