Mexico World Leader in Environmental Care - UN Presidencia de la República go to original

Magdy Martínez-Solimán, Resident UN Coordinator in Mexico and personal representative of Ban Ki.Moon, UN General Secretary said that the 250 million trees pledged and planted in 2007 were crucial to achieving the world goal.
"We congratulate Mexico on the report submitted to the United Nations Program for the Environment corroborating the achievement of its goal and we are delighted to note that the Pro-Tree Program has created synergies between the public authorities and various social and private actors for environmental care, combating poverty and boosting the productivity of its woods and forests," he added.
This is the first time UN has awarded the World Leadership Certificate to a president, and confirms Mexico's leadership in world environmental care through specific, verifiable, high impact actions.
As part of the World Environment Day, President Felipe Calderón expressed his thanks for the award and repeated his commitment to work even harder to preserve the environment.
In this respect, he invited all Mexicans, regardless of their social status or political affiliation, to help plant the largest possible number of trees possible in a single day on July 5. Mexico City - This morning, Mexican President Felipe Calderón received Carter Roberts, Bruce Babbitt and Omar Vidal, CEO and President, President of the Board and Representative in Mexico of the World Wildlife Fund respectively at the official Los Pinos residence.
The WWF directors acknowledged the strategic role Mexico has played in the design and implementation of strategies and actions to combat climate change.
They also highlighted President Calderón's leadership in environmental issues and stressed the Pro-Tree Reforestation Program, as well as the actions being undertaken to contribute to the care of the monarch butterfly.
The President expressed his personal commitment and that of his government to promoting public policies that will contribute to sustainable economic development, in harmony with the environment.
He also declared that he will continue with the actions undertaken to promote a genuine culture of environmental preservation and care nationwide.
During the meeting, the President was accompanied by Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources and Antonio Vivanco Casamadrid, Coordinator of the President’s Advisors.
The WWF is an organizations dedicated to stopping environmental degradation. Its main goals include preserving biological diversity, guaranteeing the sustainable use of renewable natural resources and promoting the reduction of pollution.
This organization has been in Mexico since 1968. In 1990, it set up an office in Oaxaca and in 1993, it began operating in the Federal District. |
