President Felipe Calderón launched the "Let’s Save Energy to Live Better" Program in Quintana Roo this week.

Quintana Roo - President Calderón launched the "Let’s Save Energy to Live Better" Program, through which people will be able to exchange their old refrigerators, air conditioning unit and light bulbs for ones that save energy and thereby reduce their electricity bills.

This experimental program, which will be launched in 11 municipalities in Quintana Roo, Sonora and Sinaloa, will replace 11,000 refrigerators that are over 10 years old, and 11,000 air conditioning units and provide 152,000 energy saving light bulbs, which will produce savings of 354,000 megawatts an hour in the country.

President Felipe Calderón explained that through these measures, people will be able to save an average of 55 pesos a month simply by changing their refrigerators, while for government, this involves savings of 375 million pesos in electricity which it will be able to use for creating new electrification programs throughout the country.

This will also save 632 barrels of oil and prevent 252,000 tons of carbon bioxide from being emitted, which is why this program is extremely important, because of government’s commitment to environmental care and leaving the new generations cleaner air.

On the other hand, he explained that his administration is making an effort to continue subsidizing gasoline and explained for example that in Mexico, gasoline costs just over 7 pesos a liter whereas in Europe it costs 25 and in Guatemala it costs 14 pesos.

In order to be able to exchange their domestic appliances, applicants will have to show their electricity bills, official identification and prove that the appliance is over 10 years old.

During the event, the President publicly thanked the Federal Electricity Commission workers and urged their Director General, Alfredo Elías Ayub to continue working for the benefit of the population in Mexico.
