Mexico Seeks to Break New World Tree Planting Record Presidencia de la República go to original
| The goal is to plant 300,000 trees over a period of 24 hours, with the participation of 300 people. This record is currently held by India where 300 persons planted 254,000 trees in 24 hours in 2005. | | Zapopan, Jalisco - On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 August, the National Forestry Commission, with the support of 300 planters in various parts of Durango, will attempt to break the world record by planting 300,000 trees in 24 hours.
The planters who will take part in this work are already involved in conservation and restoration work in the state, meaning that planting will be carried out in ideal conditions. The land to be reforested has an area of 179 hectares, which has already been prepared and is already sufficiently moist to ensure that the trees will take root.
These actions are complementary and will be added to Mexico's goal of planting 280 million trees in 2008, through reforestation actions and reforesting through soil, auxiliary concept’ considered in ProTree.
The land will be sub-divided into 34 plots of 5 to 6 hectares. Each plot of land will be looked after by 10 to 11 people, who will plant between 9 and 10,000 trees. The reforestation work will be carried out during daylight hours. Work will begin on Friday August 29 at 13:00 and end at 20:30 that same day.
Work will resume on Saturday August 30 at 7:30 and end at 12:59 that same day. The 300,000 trees belong to the following species: Pinus engelmani and Pinus cooperi. Judge Ralph Hannah from the Guinness Book of records will be present at the event to evaluate the land and check the number of trees planted this weekend.
