Castro: Millions Too Racist to Vote for Obama

Castro said last week it is “a miracle that the Democratic candidate hasn't suffered the same luck as (assassinated leaders) Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and others who harboured dreams of equality and justice.”
The ailing former president said millions of whites "cannot reconcile themselves to the idea that a black person ... could occupy the White House, which is called just that: white."
His comments come as questions were raised last week about whether there is a dirty tricks campaign to discourage black voters and hurt Obama’s chances to become the US’ first black president.
Obama has been ahead of Republican rival John McCain in recent polls.
But Taylor Media Services reported last week that ‘mysterious’ flyers, trying to frighten away black voters, have appeared in mostly black neighbourhoods in Philadelphia.
They falsely warned potential black voters that undercover agents would be at polling stations on Election Day and would arrest anyone with pending criminal charges, including for unpaid parking tickets, if they turned up to vote.
In addition, a recent New York Times article claimed its investigations found that ‘tens of thousands of eligible voters had been removed from rolls or blocked from registering’ in six states by an exclusion method which ‘appears to violate federal law’.
Some have also questioned the 11 state charges over alleged voter fraud thrown at the Association of Community Organizations for Reform (ACORN), a group that has registered a record 1.3 million people to vote, mostly in low-income black and Hispanic communities.
A recent AP-Yahoo poll suggested Obama could also lose as much as six percentage points because of racism. |
