Federal Government Fulfills Commitment to Remove Obstacles Blocking Progress of Radio and Television Presidencia de la República go to original
| "Freedom of expression is Mexicans' right, not a concession." - President Felipe Calderón | | Mexico City - During the 50th Anniversary of National Radio and Television Week, President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa invited the electronic media to continue promoting key values among Mexicans, such as honesty, patriotism and the value of work, as the only means of progressing.
Addressing an audience of media workers, communicators and businessmen, the President said that the solution to the problems facing Mexico such as the economic crisis and the lack of law and order must be assumed as a collective task involving all Mexicans.
In this respect, he said: “I urge you to encourage a change of attitude, and a change of mentality, particularly among young people and not to allow hope in Mexico to disappear; to elicit collective awareness to cope with and solve the problems that affect us and to overcome adversity."
President Calderón confirmed his government's continued respect for freedom of expression, adding that the free expression of ideas is not a concession but a right and achievement of Mexicans.
“That is why freedom of expression must be linked to respect for others and responsibility for the country's development; your work requires freedom, responsibility and social commitment," he declared.
The President stated that Federal Government has fulfilled the three main commitments assumed during the previous edition of National Radio and Television Week: protect radio and television stations from the threat of violent takeovers, renew the concessions in the sector and promote the technological reconversion of broadcasting services.
Regarding the first measure, he said that government has not and will not permit the illegal takeover of installations by violent groups and that it will meet the state's main commitment, which is to enforce the law and recover security for all citizens.
As for the second commitment, he mentioned that last June, the Secretariat of Communications and Transport handed over the first package of 131 referendums of concessions to radio industrialists, thereby guaranteeing the continuity of their operations in an atmosphere of certainty.
Regarding the third commitment, he said that on September 15, the guidelines for radio licensees to be able to access the change of frequencies from Modulated Bandwidth to Modulated Frequency, which will increase the coverage and quality of service, and make the industry more competitive, were published.
The President stated that his Administration will continue working to ensure that broadcasters have the best conditions for effectively complying with their social function, since citizens benefit from the coordinated work of Federal Government and the media.
A propos of this, Enrique Pereda Gómez, President of the Board of Directors of the National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry declared that industrialists in this sector hailed the agreement authorizing the bases for the change of frequencies of AM to FM stations and expressed CIRT’s commitment to abiding by the rules established in systems and standards for digitalization.
“Thank you for initiating the process of endorsements of our concessions and for this great opportunity that will enable us to make use of the most advanced information technologies in our permanent work of communication, information and entertainment,” he added. |
