Latin America Outraged at Cinemark's Support of Proposition 8 Larry Sheldon - PVNN
| | | The CEO of Cinemark Theaters contributed $9,999 USD in support of California's Proposition 8, which passed and did away with the right for same sex couples to marry in California.
Cinemark owns 2700 screens in 13 countries in North and South America, including the brands Cinemark, Century, CinéArts, and Tinseltown. That includes their ownership of Cinemark Theaters at Plaza Caracol here in Puerto Vallarta.
A copy of the letter I sent to the Cinemark Board of Directors appears below. I hope that it will not only encourage you to join me in boycotting all Cinemark Theaters, but that it will also inspire you to send an email with your own remarks and/or comments on the subject to Cinemark's Board of Directors at human.resources@cinemark.com.
Dear Board of Directors:
Just wanted you to know that the actions of your CEO are, indeed, felt worldwide. It’s not just a local matter anymore. His donation to those who passed Proposition 8 in California was noticed, even here in Mexico. I live in Puerto Vallarta, and everyone I know with a conscience is going to boycott the Cinemark Theater at Plaza Caracol until you take further positive action on the California situation.
Much like the US District of Columbia the Federal District of Mexico, including Mexico City and surrounding areas, and the large Mexican state of Chihuahua have both passed legislation approving same-sex couple marriages. It is considered just a matter of time until this will be the norm and the law across all of Mexico, in spite of Mexico’s predominantly Catholic bent.
If equality can be winning in Mexico, as well as many other places in Latin America, surely it should win in the United States of America ... beginning with California.
However you feel, personally, on this subject, now that the actions of your CEO have been heard, read about, and noticed throughout the western hemisphere it is going to hurt your movie theater business. That’s the bottom line - your bank accounts. Think about it. Is it worth it from a business point of view, regardless of fairness and equality?
Sincerely, Larry Sheldon Retired IBM Executive |
