Out and About in Puerto Vallarta Twila Crawford - PVNN
| For the first Old Town Art Walk of the season all of the galleries were decorated in a Day of the Dead theme. Some galleries displayed altars, such as this one at Galeria Uno. | | Did I ever learn a lot on the first Art Walk of the season. Spectacular! That's the expanded and extended Corsica, Leona Vicario 230. Large and small paintings, including museum pieces, stand out. A waterfall is soothing. It's worth a visit anyway to talk with owner Jean Pierre Renucci.
Across the street, Galeria Omar Alonso features several top-name artists, including Luis Gonzalez Palma. A beautiful gallery... and Edgar Pena was so helpful.
Emociones is a new gallery at Leona Vicario 230-C. Yuri Zatarain is the featured artist who is described as a "free soul."
Artist Anita Rodriguez is known for her colorful paintings and is a recognized expert in adobe architectural finishing, and is a published writer. Galeria Vallarta, Juarez 265, features her and many other artists. Owner Barbara Peters is founder of the Art Walk.
Japanice is a new modern Japanese cuisine restaurant, Morelos 696, the site of the former Azul. The Sky Bar is open again. Tel: 222-2262.
Wandering on down to Cafe Bohemio, I was introduced to Edward Wolowiec, owner of Port Edward nautical restaurant in Algoniquin, Il, near Chicago, who is here annually for the Gourmet Festival, November 13-23 this year. The restaurant is a recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. A nautical shop, wine cellar, an art gallery and rare nautical antiques overlook the Fox River. Sol Rose of Cafe Bohemio has a signed book of Edward Wolowiec about his nautical restaurant. Go to PortEdward.com.
Nine shows are lined up between now and Christmas at Santa Barbara Theater on Olas Altas. New shows, Bums on Broadway and Liza MANelli, and older shows, Fever, Nunsense, and Always, Patsy Cline run through November and December. For schedules, go to CurtainCallCommunityTheater.org.

The 15th anniversary of Lucy Cucu Cabana, Basilio Badillo 295, will be celebrated on Friday, November 14, 6:00 - 9:00 pm. A one-night display of all of Gil's and Lucy's new textiles from Chiapas and Guatemala and a new collection of masks will educate us while we sip on Lucy's "unforgettable" Margaritas.
A gala dinner and Las Vegas fantasy will highlight Make-A-Wish-Mexico on Saturday, December 20, at 7:30 pm at Oscar's Restaurant on the River Cuale in Vallarta. For further information, call Paty Oseguera (322) 293-7534.

On Halloween, a group of us celebrated with lunch at Coco's at Barrio Sur on Pulpito, restaurant reviewer Gary Beck being our leader. The greenery surrounding us there is so refreshing.
On Halloween evening, harmonica player Curtis Blake from Minneapolis, performed to a full house at Cuates y Cuetes on the beach. Bass guitarist Steve York, keyboardist Lisa York, and drummer Memo added zest to the evening. Little devils and witches kept entering in search of goodies. The annual Jazz Festival is on the beach in front of the restaurant on November 19. It draws many music lovers.
At the former Miguelito's on Basilio Badillo (the new name is embarrassing for some so I won't use it), it is renovated beautifully with a huge bar upstairs now. Lori Lorenzen has a business partner who has several establishments in New York state. A grand opening will take place on November 14, the same night as Gil`s and Lucy's bash. The businesses are near each other.
A huge party and fashion show will be on Saturday, November 29, in front of blu Salon and Spa. A Model Call will be from noon - 5:00 pm on Monday, November 10. Tel: 223-9660.
Philippa Vernon-Powell called a group of us together for a pre-wedding brunch for Margaret L'Cuyer at Daiquiri Dick's. Margaret gives greatly through volunteer efforts in Vallarta. The wedding is soon. Oh, yes, the groom is Terence Lloyd Blocka. Some lovely persons were at my table - Claire Wagner, Shirley Preston, Sandra Ryan, Gail Jarema and Silvia Gagnon. Toody Walton of La Bohemia and Debbi of nearby Banana Cantina joined us.
Four hosts and waiters greeted me and surrounded me at Canto del Mar, on the beach across from Parque Lazaro Cardenas, a quite different treatment from a couple of weeks ago at La Bodeguita del Medio. At Canto del Mar, enough couldn't be done for all of us, even with a couple of large parties. Red "Coca Cola" chairs and oil cloth-covered tables set on the sand provide a beachfront feeling for sure, whether eating a hot dog, fish or crabmeat tacos. Stop by - they undoubtedly will welcome you.
