Offshore Fish Farming OK’d for the Gulf of Mexico Associated Press go to original
| Farm-raised fish won't be relegated to onshore anymore after a move was approved to allow fishing farms in the Gulf of Mexico. WWL-TV's Doug Mouton reports. | | Offshore fish farming has gotten the OK for the Gulf of Mexico.
On Wednesday evening, an agency that sets fishing rules in the Gulf approved a plan to open up offshore waters to fish farming over the objections of fishermen and environmentalists.
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council voted 11-to-5 in favor of fish farming. One member abstained.
Now, the rules will need to be approved by the U.S. Commerce Department before companies can start growing fish in cages in deep waters offshore.
The council’s vote makes the Gulf the first area of federal waters in the United States where fish farming could be legal. |
