President Calderón awards prizes during Nurses' Day Celebration 2009
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón repeated his government’s commitment to Mexicans’ health, adding that despite the international economic downturn, investments in this sector will continue.

"We will go on building more hospital infrastructure, but we will also invest in the countryside, culture and tourism; in short, we will set to work to cope with the difficult economic conditions that have arisen worldwide," he declared.

During the Nurses' Day Ceremony 2009, in the Adolfo López Mateos Hall of the Official Residence, the President stressed the Administration’s goal of achieving universal health coverage by 2011, which will be an excellent way of celebrating the Centenary of the Revolution and the Bicentennial of Mexico’s Independence.

"It will be an achievement of which I am sure all those that participate in it will be extremely proud, particularly the country's doctors and nurses," he declared.

Accompanied by Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, the President said that in order to achieve this goal, several actions have been implemented, such as increasing the funds assigned to health. He praised the delegates and senators who ensured that for 2009, the Health Secretariat will have over $85 billion pesos in Section 12, 23% more than in 2008.

He also hailed the boost given to both the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the State Workers’ Institute of Social Security and Services (ISSSTE) which lacked the infrastructure to meet Mexicans' demands.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Prosperous 2009 and confirm Federal Government’s commitment to Mexicans’ health, which simply reflects the daily example set through their work and lives by Mexico's nurses who are specifically committed to Mexicans’ health," he said.

President Calderón also awarded prizes for Nursing Excellence and stressed that his government will continue to implement the necessary measures to maintain the stability of the country's country and thereby protect Mexican families' jobs and income.
