At the Economic Opportunities Forum, he declared that Mexico has implemented several actions for coping with the world crisis.
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declared that Federal Government is reinforcing the state's authority throughout the country to combat organized crime, adding that his administration is determined to eliminate this problem the country is suffering as a result of being next to the world's largest drug consumer and arms supplier.

“We are reinforcing the state’s authority in places, regions, municipalities and local governments where security has been weakened or damaged as a result of crime and we are bringing all the state's strength to bear on this.”

During the forum on Mexico: Economic Outlook and Opportunities for the New World Environment, the President declared that the problem of organized crime is not exclusive to Mexico. He urged the US government to make a joint effort in the fight against organized crime.

In this respect, he trusted in President Barack Obama’s leadership in order to work “better than ever” on this binational challenge.

“Organized crime attacks both sides of the border, harming American and Mexican families. Organized crime is a joint challenge that President Obama and I will face together,” he said.

Accompanied by Secretaries of Foreign Affairs Patricia Espinosa Cantellano and the Economy Gerardo Ruiz Mateos, President Calderón said that there is an enormous distortion of the reality in Mexico outside the country. He regretted the escalation of a campaign devoted to attacking and lying about the situation in Mexico and praising criminals.

“That will not drive us back or affect our determination to strengthen the rule of law in Mexico and guarantee security for every Mexico, which we are still striving to achieve," he said.

The President told an audience of Mexican and American businessmen that his government is working harder than ever to "put its house in order" and, with society's support, will not rest until there is a free, safe Mexico.

“The advantage is that there is a firmly determined government with enough strength to be able to beat criminals, with a society that supports it fully. We will not rest until we have a free, safe Mexico where our families can live in peace and our children can walk safely to school and play outside," he added.

President Calderón remarked that during this international economic downturn, his government has implemented several actions to cope with it, such as the Temporary Employment and Technical Strike Programs that have prevented 160,000 workers from losing their jobs over these past few months.

He also highlighted the investment in infrastructure as well as the tax and pension reforms, adding that a solid banking system has enabled small and medium-sized companies to be given credit.

“In short, we are well aware of the storm but we are also convinced that the country is on the right track," he said.
