Climate Change One of the Greatest Challenges Facing Mankind: President Calderón Presidencia de la República go to original
| Combating it is a task that concerns all nations: President Calderón | | London, England - At the British Council, currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, President Felipe Calderón declared that the climate change produced by global warming is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind in the 21st century.
During his State Visit to the United Kingdom, he said that combating climate change is not only the responsibility of developed countries but of all countries, which is why he considered that everyone should collaborate to solve it and that everyone can do something, in order to achieve our objectives.
A propos of this, President Calderón said that a great deal of time is being lost in the discussion of objectives concerning carbon emissions reduction worldwide.
“The problem are the not the objectives themselves. The problem is that we do not have the right instruments for the job, meaning that there is no point wasting another five years discussing what the right objectives are," he said.
He said that with the right economic incentives, it is possible to change many behaviors and types of performance, which is why he said Mexico has proposed the creation of a Green Fund against climate change.
The Green Fund, explained the Mexican president, could be the instrument that will enable countries and companies to obtain financing capital, whether this means mitigation, savings or energy efficiency programs, or carbon sequestration programs.
He said that all countries, with the exception of the poorest nations, should contribute to the creation of this Fund, under the principle of shared but different responsibilities.
Among the actions carried out by his government to reduce emissions, President Calderón mentioned the ProTree Program, which provides financial incentives for countries that protect their woods and forests and participate in reforestation activities.
He added that his administration has recently implemented a domestic appliance replacement program, known as "New Appliances for Old," through which low-income families are given funds to replace their refrigerators or old air conditioning equipment for new appliances that consume less energy, which in turn will produce fewer emissions. |
