Semarnat director said this will enable Mexico to have greater access to British funds to continue undertaking projects.
Mexico City - Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada and Secretary of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs of the United Kingdom, Hilary Benn, signed the Memorandum of Understanding for a Dialogue that will Ensure a Sustainable Future in order to integrate bilateral cooperation and the commitment of both nations to maintaining the issues of sustainable development and climate change as a central issue.

The signing of this agreement, which forms part of the activities of the Semarnat Director who is accompanying President Felipe Calderón on his state visit to the United Kingdom, will provide Mexico with greater access to British funds to continue developing environmental projects.

Secretary Elvira reported that in sustainability issues, Mexico and the United Kingdom are working on 13 projects in Mexico with an investment of 100 million pesos, 40 million of which have been contributed by the Sustainable Dialogue Development (SDD) of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs of the United Kingdom, which focus mainly on sustainable production and consumption, tourism and the management of natural resources and global warming.

Of these project, he highlighted a study on the economic impact of Climate Change in Mexico, training in sustainable practices for major hotels in the Mexican Caribbean and the project to support the closure of municipal rubbish tips in Nuevo León which, he said, has produced positive results, since 14 rubbish tips have been closed, leading to a reduction of methane emissions of approximately 25,000 tons carbon equivalent.

He recalled that cooperation between the two countries is based on the signing of various agreements, including the letter of intent between the Mexican Secretariat for the Environment and Natural and the UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to Continue and Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation in Sustainable Development Issues signed on March 20 2006.

It is also based on the Memorandum of Understanding for a Dialogue on Sustainable Development between the Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretariat and the corresponding Ministries and Departments of the United Kingdom signed on October 4, 2006, the Mexico-United Kingdom Declaration, signed by President Felipe Calderón and the then British Prime Minister, Tony Blair on January 29, 2007.
