“It is a monument that will pay tribute to history and at the same time, inherits the best of Mexican architecture, with its great tradition and aesthetic sensitivity,” he said.
At the former site of the 18 de Marzo Refinery, in Azcapotzalco, the President announced that today is the start of the second stage of the project, the development of the park. $1.2 billion pesos are to be invested in this project, which will feature world-class cultural, sports and recreational activities.
He said that the first phase included environmental work, in other words, cleaning up the 55 ha of the Bicentennial Park, equivalent to nine times the area of the Aztec Stadium, 22 of which are ready and 33 of which will be completed this year. This work has cost nearly one billion pesos.
Construction of the park, he said, will create five thousand jobs, which will primarily benefit the inhabitants of adjoining areas.
“We are going to respond to citizens' legitimate demands for more and better recreational areas," he said.
Accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala and Environmental Secretary Rafael Elvira Quesada, President Calderón said that an exhibition has also been planned for the 2010 festivitieis in an area of the National Palace currently being remodeled to turn it into a National Gallery.
“In short, major cultural, artistic, educational and ecological projects are being planned through which we will celebrate our history, present and future. It must be a year of rejoicing, brotherhood and commitment," he said.
He evoked General José María Morelos y Pavón, who on May 26 1811 achieved a military victory over the royalist army in Tixtla, now the state of Guerrero.
The Mexican president said that the mission of the Bicentennial generation is to transform Mexican society as regards education, justice, law, equity, health and prosperity.
“It must transform Mexico through everyone's efforts into a safer, fairer country, a country with economic growth and justice, a fairer, cleaner Mexico. Together, Mexicans will be able to forge a destiny that matches our desires, dignity and history," he said.
