Authors See Violence's Social Effect Rumbo de Mexico go to original September 18, 2009
Young adults are examining the ties between literature and violence at the ongoing First National Young Writers Conference in Monterrey.
The event, whose theme is "Between Words and Violence," brings together writers who are talking about the aesthetics and market of violence, its role as a literary tradition and the moral and creative aspects there are in the written word.
Writers under 35 from 20 states will also take a critical look at the culture of violence in literature and where it is headed in the 21st century through workshops, discussions, public debates and group readings.
The event opened Thursday in the Museum of Contemporary Art with a speech by Mexican writer Daniel Sada and ends Saturday in a discussion with Argentine poet and 2007 Cervantes prize-winner Juan Gelman.
Zaira Espinosa, of the National Arts Commission (Conarte) said the event will bring together diverse perspectives.
"A young writer from Tijuana, or from Guadalajara, or Veracruz, or from (Monterrey) don't have the same concepts or perceptions," she said. "We are all living in similar situations because we're united as a country, but at the same time we all have very different realities." |
