Missing in Mexico – One Woman’s Bravery Nick Martin - Channel4.com go to original January 14, 2010
| Nick Martin recalls a crucial moment in his investigation into the disappearance of young women in a Mexico border town - when Maria to talk agreed to about her experiences. | | When I first met Maria it was in the lobby of a hotel somewhere in Mexico.
It was an hour before we carried out her now remarkable interview. We sat down and had breakfast and I told her that what she was about to do not only took immeasurable bravery but would make a difference to the children and young women trapped in a miserable life - a life she was fortunate to have escaped.
Of course, that’s not the first time I’ve said that to a person shortly before an interview. But this time I really meant it - and beleived it.
This was halfway through our four-month investigation, and it was a key moment in our ability to tell this story to whoever wanted to listen.
But not even I could have imagined the effect that Maria’s interview would have on the world. The report has spread like wild fire on the internet.
Tweets and re-tweets have taken it to a new audience - away from the traditional newspapers and magazines. Radio reporters across the US and Mexico have contacted me for interviews, and I’ve had emails from journalists who have worked tirelessly on the issue of human trafficking on the US/Mexico border, stating that the report had struck a cord with them.
The piece was even mentioned by Dom. Anthony Sutch during the Thought for the Day slot on Radio 4's Today programme this morning.
But the story is not over. We will see in the coming months if what Maria told us and subsequently the US authorities will actually have an affect. I hope so. |
