Puerto Vallarta World Water Day 2010 Celebrations and Events
email this pageprint this pageemail usPamela Evans - PVNN
March 18, 2010

In 1993, the UN Assembly General designated March 22 as World Water Day and invited all nations to celebrate it with substantive actions that promote public awareness of the importance of preserving this crucial resource. The theme for 2010 is "Clean Water for a Healthy World," reflecting this year’s emphasis on water quality.

The objectives are:

• To raise awareness of how to sustain healthy ecosystems and human well-being given today’s water-quality challenges for water-management entities

• To encourage governments and communities to pro actively improve water quality through pollution control and via clean-up and restoration of their water sources.

SEAPAL of Puerto Vallarta will celebrate this important day by hosting activities and events all week long.

Some of the events you won't want to miss are: the Water Expo and Opening Ceremony at Los Arcos Amphitheatre on Friday, March 19th, which begins at 10:30 am with a special performance by the "Vallarta Azteca" children's ballet; and the SEAPAL 10K Race on Sunday, March 21, which begins at 8:30 am at the sports complex where Medina Ascencio and Francisco Villa meet. More information is available at seapal.gob.mx or by emailing cultura(at)seapal.gob.mx.

If you cannot attend these events, here’s what you CAN do to conserve our "fountain of life," which is already suffering scarcities in Puerto Vallarta:

In the Bathroom: While waiting for the flow of hot water in your shower or sink faucets, place a container under the tap; use what you collect to water your plants. Shut off the sink faucet while you soap your hands, shave, or brush your teeth. Cut down the time you spend under the shower and use water-saving shower heads. Placing a sealed bottle of water or other displacement device inside the toilet tank will conserve water with every flush.

While Cleaning: Do only full loads when laundering clothes. The discharge water from the machine can be collected to keep dust down on the street or to wash the patio. Never throw cooking oil or grease down the drain; seal it in a plastic container and place in your “organic” garbage. Wash dishes in a tub rather than under running water.

Around the House: Promptly repair water leaks in faucets and pipes. Lower your household water-pressure setting. Use a bucket to wash your car rather than letting the hose run.

If we all took these little steps, we could save nearly 90 billion liters of water every day. Please Do Your Part!
