First Race Day of the 2010 Banderas Bay Regatta is in the Books Richard Williams - banderasbayregatta.com March 19, 2010
| The 2010 Banderas Bay Regatta runs through Saturday, March 20th. | | What started out as a somewhat gray and dismal day turned to perfection for the 1st day of competition of the 2010 Banderas Bay Regatta. The normal wind patterns that make Banderas Bay one of the premiere sailing venues in the world reappeared before the 1:30 pm race time and allowed the 56 boats that started the race to experience a glorious day of racing. With a couple of exceptions no single boat really dominated their class.
This sets up some interesting competition for the rest of the week which means that Saturday's final division winners will be determined by the skill of the captains and crew rather than by bad handicapping.
This day had its share of "bad luck" that occasionally haunts even the best sailor - things like a torn sail (several today) a cracked boom, and a bad transmission on the auxiliary engine. Because of these "stuff happens" occurrences only 46 boats crossed the finish line and a number of others paid visits to the local rigging shop.
Today's WOW of the day must go to the skipper who was sailing the catamaran Pantera. Pantera finished 3 in "C" division. What makes this such a memorable feat is that she was not only raced single handed, but was also flying a spinnaker.
