Mexico's UNAM Calls for Social Progress Magnolia Velázquez - The News go to original April 07, 2010
Mexico City – The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), José Narro Robles, yesterday called for a consensus on public policies seeking to reinforce social cohesion instead of widening the social gap.
“It is time to create a more modern, educated and inclusive nation,” Narro said yesterday during an award ceremony organized by the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District (ALDF) to honor the University for winning the 2009 Príncipe de Asturias Prize in Communication and Humanities.
Narro insisted on the importance of beginning new projects aiming at strengthening the social fabric through social justice. He emphasized the need to build a nation with fewer inequities and with an economic activity able to respond to global challenges in order to prevent falling into limbo.
“We live in a society where a happy few possess too much and where the majority has almost nothing. This situation generates distrust and resentment, while weakening dignity and human values. It is worth making an effort to unify our strengths,” he said.
“I am convinced that the different political parties and the different actors of society, including scholars, academics, civil organizations, workers’ unions and businesses, have more things in common than not,” Narro added.
Narro said that the UNAM was committed to working with the capital and the country through professional training programs and through infrastructure improvement projects. |
