There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.

Los Mango Library Looking to Generate Funds

Due to the economical situation they find themselves in, Los Mangos Library located on Francisco Villa Street, is coming up with diverse events to improve their financial situation. This year's annual fundraising auction held in late January, raised $250 thousand pesos, which will help pay for services, salaries and maintenance amongst other things that add up to approximately $75 to $90 thousand pesos in expenses every month.

Admittedly they started the year off in zeros. Fortunately, they have a group of various private yearly donations of up to $100 thousand dollars. The library is in operation 12 hours a day, offering seminars and summer courses. Events like the upcoming 6th Annual Altruism Festival will help provide Los Mangos with the necessary funds to support those who are not in the financial position to pay for courses.

Also, this will be the Puerto Vallarta Public Library's third year participating in the government program called, "Vive" ("Live") - a social assistance program set up to support certain institutions or foundations. The benefits of this program along with other resources, will allow the library to expand and to continue to operate on a daily basis.

First International Festival of Electronic Music 2010

The First International Festival of Electronic Music will be held at the Corona Field, near the main bus station in Puerto Vallarta, on April 2nd and 3rd, 2010. Titled "Balance" this two-day musical event will feature renowned national and international artists.

According to Alfredo Fuentes, the timing of this event was designed to co-ordinate perfectly with the Semana Santa holidays. This is the week when Puerto Vallarta experiences a huge influx of tourists, which makes it the perfect time to host such a spectacular event.

The Electronic Music Festival will present many different types of music, including House, Techno, Progressive, Trance and Fusion Rock, with hopes of making this a yearly event. The festival will be sponsored by Telehit and Ritmoson, which are two of the main music channels in Mexico and Latin America. Along with Sony Entertainment Channel, they will be broadcasting this event to as many as 60 countries, filming not only the various music artists, but also presenting Puerto Vallarta as a world-class tourist destination.

"Balance Festival Puerto Vallarta 2010" will take place at the Corona Field near the main bus station, starting at 4 pm on April 2nd. There will be an area designated for underage attendees where they will be provided with all the appropriate services that do not include alcohol. Also, all emergency services will be on site and readily available.

The artist line-up includes performances by Sharam, Infected Mushroom, Dave Seaman, Sandra Collins, D-Nox, Paolo Mojo, Miss Nine, John Graham, Hercyles, Love Affair and the popular Mexican rock group, Kinky.

Tickets cost between $280 and $4,000 pesos, depending on seat location, and may be purchased online at eticket.com.mx or by calling 01-800-384-2537. Two day passes are also available. For more information, visit www.myspace.com/balancefest.

CTM to Create a Work Plan for Vallarta Taxi Drivers

 UPCOMING EVENTS+ add your event
Worker's Confederation of Mexico Director, Rafael Yerena Zambrano, plans to implement a work plan for taxi drivers focusing on responsibility, honesty, respect, service and professionalism. Included in this plan will be a database for those who commission out their taxis as well as the drivers themselves.

According to Rafael Yerena, "For Puerto Vallarta in particular, the dilemma is that not all taxi drivers own their vehicles, and not all owners are aware of the service that is being given." He also pointed out that educating the drivers about the importance of their role in Puerto Vallarta tourism is essential.

"Not only are taxis an important means of transportation, but taxi drivers are often the first person a tourist makes contact with when seeking information." Rafael Yerena went on to say that there have been several tourist complaints especially focused on the night shift drivers. With this information, he has asked the State Governor, Tomαs Coronado Olmos, to investigate taxi drivers who are not abiding by the rules and who are creating a disservice to the taxi association.
