President Felipe Calderón inaugurates Wastewater Treatment Plant in San José del Cabo
San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur - During the inauguration of the La Sonoreña Wastewater Treatment Plant, President Felipe Calderón declared that through this plant, Mexicans have become jointly responsible to the environment by cleaning the water they use.

“It is the first time we have broken the cycle of having a generation arrive, dirtying their surroundings and leaving the next generation a dirtier place which they in turn continue to dirty."

We are breaking the cycle. This generation is cleaning the water and the environment. And in this way, we will not only be leaving a cleaner place for those that come after us but a new culture of cleanliness and respect for the environment,” he declared.

As part of his tour of Baja California Sur, in San José del Cabo, the President stressed that nowadays we must be more careful about the way we use water and thereby assume a responsibility to the environment.

“We have a clear commitment to the environment and Mexicans’ health and jobs, especially the jobs of the diligent, hard-working people who have made it possible not only to overcome adversity but also to progress in Los Cabos, this beautiful corner of Mexico that is admired worldwide," he stressed.

Accompanied by Governor Narciso Agúndez Montaño, and by José Luis Luege Tamargo, Director of the National Water Commission, the President said that his administration has also advanced in wastewater treatment, since in 2006 only 30% was treated, the goal being to reach 60% by 2012.

“Through this Wastewater Treatment Plant, we will prevent the pollution of marshes and beaches as well as benefitting tourism, because there are many tourist resorts competing with Los Cabos, whose beaches and environment are just as pretty. However, their sea and beaches are very dirty because they don’t treat the water they discharge, which sends tourists away.”
