Life... The Mexican Way Sean Chalfin - PVNN June 04, 2010
| | I have met Mexican men who were deported back to Mexico and torn apart from their wives or kids in America. It's truly horrible that America lets this happen. What's wrong with us? | | | | S.B. 1070 has me worked up a little. I am a 42 year old American in Scottsdale, Arizona. I have lived in Mexico for a little bit and want to share my thoughts about our friends in Mexico. These thoughts are from traveling the entire Baja by car several times, living in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, and adventuring into hundreds of towns in between.
• Mexicans are clever and genuinely very nice.
• I have learned enough Spanish to impress a several Mexicans and my American friends but I wished that I studied Spanish harder in 8th grade. Americans should all know at least two languages. You would surprised how many Mexicans know English.
• What takes 3 hours in the states to complete can take 3 to 4 weeks in Mexico! For example; installing cable television takes 3 to 4 weeks.
• Sending a space shuttle into orbit is easier than getting Internet service installed in your Mexican home.
• Getting parts for a car will take a week or two. And will likely leave you stranded in a town you were not planning on being in!
• Mexican guys really don't like you dating their chicas.
• The Mexican guy ego is HUGE!
• Almost every waiter changes the price on the menu from what's on your bill!
• American journalism reports Mexican crime as if America is without crime. Mexico is a lot safer than America; my opinion. However, theft sure seems to be an issue here. Mexico's crime problem today reminds me of our Chicago, Nevada, and New York organized crime waves... with less glitz and a little more blood.
• Chivalry is alive and well in Mexico. It's too bad that it seems American women have lost their zest for real romance. American women should observe their Latin American counterparts.
• Mexican food is not full of the anti-biotics, steroids and high-fructose corn syrup like American food; which is America's biggest enemy! Our food supply is contaminated. Until Costco & Walmart rolled into town; corn syrup and partially hydrogenated food products were not allowed in Mexico. At least Coca Cola and Pepsi products are still made with real cane sugar. Mountain Dew is not sold in Mexico because the taste cannot be duplicated with cane sugar. Coca Cola taste much better in Mexico!
• It's amazing how much America has influenced Mexico by making life better, easier, and efficient. Example: Internet cafes and coffee shops! Costco & Walmart have significant presences in almost all major towns. Of course; these same stores are sucking the life out of the Mexican downtowns like they do in America!
• Bring your iPod to Mexico because there are no good radio stations.
• Chickens and dogs are sacred and cock roaches are gigantic. Mexico has cock fights in the barrios in which gambling is legal. The cocks fight to their death.
• Mexicans only want to come to America for a better life or to take care of their families in Mexico. We should let them (legally).
• I have met Mexican men who were deported back to Mexico and torn apart from their wives or kids in America. It's truly horrible that America lets this happen. What's wrong with us?
• If you find something that works in Mexico keep it! Most things don't!
• Whatever you do, Don't tell your satellite company that you are broadcasting to Mexico (TV or satellite radio). Your service will be cancelled and your box will be blacklisted! Take your US receiver with you if you plan to have satellite TV.
• You will become in touch with your digestive system in Mexico!
• The food is fabulous here. I have certainly learned how to cook new dishes. Simple and fabulous!
• S.B. 1070 is not going to stop crime. Americans need to stop buying illegal drugs. Their drug problem has blossomed because of us! They even use legal products we created to promote drug trafficking... like Visa debit cards. Since cash cannot be wired in large amounts; they load up debit cards with tens of thousands of dollars on one card. They pass through customs with cash debit cards in their wallets; worth thousands! It's clever. And legal.
• America is obese! While in Cabo San Lucas, a hot spot for tourists around the world, I observed people from many countries order ice cream at Senor Sweets in the marina in Cabo San Lucas. Americans are astonishingly fat. We are falling behind just on physical fitness alone.
• A new class should be created in high schools across the United States. It should be called the Ugly American. This is so every spring breaker will understand that their actions in a foreign country are observed by the locals and leave a lifelong and lasting impressions.
• If you like adventure; drive the Baja to Cabo San Lucas. It's a fabulous and rugged trip! Take the ferry from La Paz to Topobalampo, which is on the mainland. You will love it. Make sure your car is in the country legally by registering it with the Mexican consulate. If you are planning on staying in Mexico for a long time; get an FM3. You will need it.
• Buy Mexican car insurance. Do not drive there without. Never. Not to mention; it only cost Mexicans $14 to get a driver's license and no driver's training is necessary for Mexican citizens.
• Mexico would be less of a third world country if it had a mail system that worked and had an affordable way to communicate from state to state. Lack of affordable communication restrains this country!
• Solar energy has caught on in Mexico. I drove past the poorest shacks in the poorest of areas and saw solar panels on the roofs. Check out these solar products: TheSunDepot.com.
• Mexico is rich in culture, tranquility, and water. It's beautiful and rugged. It's a great place to go to forget about hectic demands in America.
Ok... I am done, but these points might be interesting to you. I hope you like my Mexico experiences that I shared with you. I don't think S.B 1070 is going to change anything. Until will eliminate our demand for illegal drugs; Mexico is going to be a hot topic.
Viva Mexico! |
