Helen Thomas in Firestorm for Remarks About Israel Doug Thompson - Capitol Hill Blue go to original June 07, 2010
| Helen Thomas with President Obama | | Legendary journalist Helen Thomas dared speak out about Israel last week and she’s paying for it.
Nine Speakers Inc., which represented Thomas on the lucrative public speaking circuit, announced Sunday that it no-longer represents the acid-tongued Thomas.
“It is with a heavy heart that Nine Speakers Inc. announces its resignation as the agent for Helen Thomas, Dean of the White House Press Corps.,” Diane Nine, President of the agency, said in a statement. “Ms. Thomas has had an esteemed career as a journalist, and she has been a trailblazer for women, helping others in her profession, and behind. However, in light of recent events, Nine Speakers is no longer able to represent Ms. Thomas, nor can we condone her comments on the Middle East.”
Thomas last week said Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go “home” which she said is Poland, Germany and America.
Thomas has since apologized for her comments but that hasn’t stopped a crescendo of anger from the pro-Israel community. Former White House spokesman Ari Fleisher called on Hearst News Service to fire Thomas as a columnist. Former Clinton advisor Lanny Davis called Thomas an “anti-Semitic bigot.”
The Associated Press reports:
| A high school graduation speech by veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas has been canceled because of controversial remarks she made about Israel, the school’s principal said in an e-mail Sunday.
Thomas had been scheduled to speak at the June 14 graduation of Walt Whitman High School, but Principal Alan Goodwin wrote in the e-mail to students and parents that she was being replaced. The school in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, Md., hasn’t picked a new speaker.
“Graduation celebrations are not the venue for divisiveness,” Goodwin wrote. |
Others want her White House press credentials revoked. Thomas currently has a reserved front row seat at all daily press briefings. |
