Vallarta Botanical Garden Orchid Conservatory Update
email this pageprint this pageemail usRobert B. Price - vallartabotanicalgardensac.org
July 02, 2010

The completion date for Vallarta Botanical Gardens' new conservatory, which will house The National Collection of Mexican Orchids, is scheduled for Fall 2010.
Construction is now underway at Vallarta Botanical Garden of the new Conservatory for the National Collection of Mexican Orchids.

Currently there is nowhere in the country to view a collection representing the rich orchid diversity found in Mexico. With over 1250 known species it would be impossible to have a specimen of each variety; therefore representatives from the major family groups will be displayed.

In 2008, Vallarta Botanical Gardens received a conservation research grant from the American Orchid Society to conduct a field survey, the first of its kind, for orchid diversity in the Cabo Corrientes region, where the Gardens are located. In a 5 kilometer radius, 56 different species of orchids were identified, confirming the area as a center of orchid biodiversity.

The architecture of this exciting new conservatory will echo the style of the plant houses from an earlier time and will become an important cultural Puerto Vallarta landmark for the enjoyment of Vallarta residents and our visitors.

Our most recent fund raising activities netted almost $25,000 USD towards the $150,000 dollars overall construction costs of this amazing and important new addition to our gardens. Garden visitors are welcome to survey to construction site.

Donations to help finish the new conservatory are still needed and are tax deductible in the US and checks can be made payable to:

Friends of Vallarta Botanical Gardens A.C.

And mailed to:

For those of you out there who are not in Puerto Vallarta at this time, please keep Mexico in your heart. For those of you here this summer, please come visit soon!
