Mexico City — A Mexican journalist has been killed in the crossfire of a shootout between marines and gunmen in the border city of Matamoros.

The newspaper El Expreso says on its website that reporter Carlos Guajardo was covering the shootout Friday when he was struck. The Matamoros newspaper gave no other details.

No one returned calls seeking comment at either the Tamaulipas state's attorney general's office or the Mexican Navy.

Local media reported Guajardo was leaving the area of the shootout when his car was hit more than 20 times.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said in a recent report that at least 22 Mexican journalists have been killed since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon launched a crackdown on cartels.
