Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Jalisco Highway Administration and Transportation Secretary Diego Villaseņor Monraz reported that taxi service commission rates were recently established in Puerto Vallarta, which will determine the fares that locals and tourists can expect to pay for cab service in the coming weeks.

The long-awaited regulation of this service seems to be coming soon and, according to reports by Secretary of Transportation Monraz, meetings have already been held with local taxi owners and licensees, unions and authorities, who don't appear to have any problems with the concept of employing the commission rates.

The secretary reported that these rates will range from twenty to one hundred pesos, and the method by which such fees were determined was a zoning of the city according to the foreign, popular, and tourist zones. The secretary cited an example: taxi drivers can not charge more than $80 pesos from El Centro to Marina Vallarta. He said that the unions, owners and drivers are already aware of this accordance, which will be established in the coming days.

According to the State Transport Regulatory Agency Director, Flavio Muņoz, if these rates are not respected, users can file complaints with the authorities. "Complaints can be made via the local Ministry of Roads and Transportation or by calling 01 8000 Turuta (01-800-088-7882) which connects you directly with Guadalajara where they deal with everything that has to do with public transportation services, such as taxis and buses. Of course there will be penalties if the rates are not respected. The penalties are still being determined, but will range from economic sanctions to the withdrawal of licenses and units," he said.
