October 10 Banderas News Brief & Upcoming PV Events

October 10, 2014

From live music and theater to cultural festivals, sporting events, charitable efforts and special interest group meetings, there's always something fun to do in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around the Republic, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Puerto Vallarta news headlines, some breaking Mexico news stories, and a few upcoming local events you won't want to miss.

Los Cabos Ready to Welcome Back Tourists

After just a few weeks, Los Cabos is ready to welcome back tourists following the Category 3 Hurricane Odile that struck on September 14. The hurricane, which tore across the Baja Peninsula, left thousands without power, electricity or potable water. The Mexican government, however, sprung into action and the destination is reporting that it is well on its way to being back and better than ever. According to the Mexico Tourism Board, approximately 5,000 hotel rooms in Los Cabos are expected to open by October 15, with an additional 7,000 rooms to open by November 15 and a final 10,000 rooms to become available by December 15. In addition, electricity, phone, Internet and potable water have been fully restored to the tourist destination of Cabo San Lucas.

6th Annual Riviera Nayarit Touristic Half-Marathon and 10K

Whether you're lacing up running shoes to compete or heading to the route in flip-flops as a spectator, you won't want to miss the 6th Annual Touristic Half-Marathon and 10K slated for Friday, Nov. 22. Aside from the scenic route, road race is appreciated for its field cap of 1,100 participants. In 2013, some 800 runners hit their strides in the globally recognized race that is fully supported by the Mexican Federation of Athletics Association. With its flat terrain at sea level, the route is considered fast. Riviera Nayarit's milder November temperatures and 7 am start time add to the appeal. Runners enjoy such pleasant distractions as lush golf courses, shaded avenues and stellar ocean views. Registration covers an official event T-shirt, commemorative finisher's medal, time tracking, water/Powerade stations, post-race snack, website published results and free photo downloads. For more information and to register for either of the event's two runs, visit MedioMaratonRivieraNayarit.com.

Joe Francis and Abbey Wilson's Twin Girls Born in Puerto Vallarta

"Girls Gone Wild" creator Joe Francis welcomed twin girls — named Alexandria Claire Francis and Athena Olivia Francis — on Tuesday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Francis, who owns a villa in nearby Punta Mita, and his girlfriend, Abbey Wilson, broke the news shortly after the birth of their daughters with a photo announcement featuring a picture of the couple and a scenic shot of Puerto Vallarta. It wasn't a surprise that Wilson delivered girls, as the couple revealed that they set out to have daughters through in vitro fertilization and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Earlier in the year, Francis said that he and Wilson chose girls because that's what they know. "Abbey comes from a family of girls, no brothers, and I have three sisters and no brothers," he said. The births are a bright spot for Francis, whose name is often attached to negative headlines. "I believe people will finally understand my love, respect, and admiration for women," Francis said in April when they announced the pregnancy. "I love girls."

Mexico's Grupo Aleman to Buy Oceanografia

Mexico's Grupo Aleman, which owns the airline Interjet, on Wednesday said it has agreed to buy Oceanografia, the bankrupt oil services company at the center of a loan scandal that cost Citigroup more than $500 million. "Grupo Aleman has reached a preliminary agreement with shareholders to take over Oceanografia," said Gabriela Jimenez, head of institutional relations for the privately held family company, which also has maritime transport interests. The deal is subject to a series of conditions, including reaching agreement with Oceanografia's creditors and other interested parties, Jimenez added. Details such as the value of the deal still have to be worked out as part of the bankruptcy process, a person familiar with the sale said. Read more at Reuters.com.
