August 19 Vallarta News Brief and Upcoming Events

August 19, 2016

From live music and theater to cultural festivals, sporting events, charitable efforts and special interest group meetings, there's always something fun happening in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta, the Riviera Nayarit and the towns around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Puerto Vallarta news, community announcements and a few upcoming events that you won't want to miss.

Severely Injured Crocodile Rescued in El Pitillal

A seriously injured crocodile was rescued by members of the Municipal Environmental and Ecology, Ecological Police and Civil Protection Departments on Tuesday after the sighting was reported late Monday afternoon. The croc, which had a large baited hook imbedded in its stomach, was found in a canal near Prisciliano Sanchez Avenue in Colonia Bobadilla. Upon capture, and after the incident was reported to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), the 2.80 meter-long reptile was taken to the Estero El Salado, where veterinarian Jonathan Nácar assessed the injury and managed to remove the hook, which had caused serious internal damage. The doctor is reserving his diagnosis until the administered antibiotics can stop the infection before deciding whether the crocodile will require surgery and if the operation can be performed at the estuary's clinic. We hope to have more information on the crocodile's condition soon. In the meantime, if you should see a crocodile in an urban area, you should report it to the Civil Protection and Fire Department, the Directorate of Environment and Ecology, so the proper authorities can coordinate efforts for the animal's safe capture and relocation. Assaulting crocodiles, as in this case, is a federal crime that can be punished by three to nine years in prison. "These animals are very important to the ecosystem, to maintain balance of species," said an Environment and Ecology officer.

Riviera Nayarit Hosts XXI National Dolphin Program

2,611 students and 200 officers, directors and special guests from 76 colleges in 21 states of Mexico, as well as one student from Costa Rica, are in the Riviera Nayarit this week attending the XXI Summer of the Scientific and Technological Research of the Pacific conference. The national conference is part of the Inter-Organization Program for Strengthening Research and the Pacific Graduate Program, commonly known as the Dolphin Program. The RIU Hotels are hosting the presentations of 1,952 scientific investigation projects, as well as sports, cultural and artistic activities through August 20, 2016. The Riviera Nayarit is the preferred venue for this scientific academic community, as over half of their conferences have been held in Mexico's Pacific Treasure. The location and its service infrastructure, the acceptance of the participants and all of the facilities provided by the Government of the State of Nayarit and the Riviera Nayarit CVB have been instrumental to the longevity of the event.

Murder in Mexico Theatre Seeks Actors for Puerto Vallarta Show

Arrangements are in the works for a new murder mystery dinner theatre that's planned for Puerto Vallarta early in the tourist season, but not all roles have been cast yet. The producers, including writer Bodie Kellogg (who some will recognize as the author of amusing columns about expat life in Mexico), are anxious to audition amateurs as well as professional actors for this strikingly funny and exciting show. "We've been so fortunate in finding some breathtakingly wonderful actors for the Puerto Vallarta production. But we need a few more. If someone has a strong sense of humor, and wants to act, our Director may be able to make it happen. Take a look at the MurderInMexico.com, or write to wendy(at)murderinmexico.com for more information. This is a great opportunity for diverting and convivial work. We have more fun putting on the show than anyone could imagine," Bodie Kellogg told us. Murder in Mexico is presently undertaking considerations and expects to announce the venue for the show soon. It is envisaged that the show will run one or two nights a week, giving ample opportunity for audience members to pick the murderer, motive, and method.

Purr Project 2017 Calendars On Sale Now

The 2017 calendars from Purr Project, a no-kill feline rescue shelter north of Puerto Vallarta, are now on sale - and they are going fast! This 5th Year Special Edition centers around the theme "deep into the gaze of felines," and features stunning photographs of cats that are presently living, or have lived, in the Purr Project shelter. The cover features "Bowie," a rescue cat from the streets of El Centro who has found her Furr-ever home in Montreal. Most of the other cats featured in the calendar are fortunate to have amazing eyes, but not fortunate enough to have found a home... yet! Proceeds from calendar sales will allow Purr Project to continue offering long-term care for these, and all of the other felines at Purr that are still up for adoption. The calendar costs $20 USD plus mailing, or $250 pesos if you are purchasing it locally. For more information about the calendar, or the shelter, email info(at)purrproject.com, or visit PuRRProject.com to learn how you can help.
