Latin Art Boom Barbara Peters
The buzz among the tourists this season is that they are amazed at the wide variety and top quality of art being created and shown in the galleries of our special city. Many have commented that our town has more art galleries than any other coastal destination in Mexico, and that Puerto Vallarta is surpassing San Miguel Allende as a major art center.
The artists being promoted here come from all over Mexico, and collectors from all over the world seek after their creations. Many are internationally known, as they also exhibit their works in the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America.
Latin American art is said to be the next art boom, as collectors realize the exceptional values and the quality of art from this region. In the past few years, works by such famous artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, and Francisco Zuniga have appreciated considerably.
The galleries in Vallarta are not limited to paintings. As well as paintings in all styles and price ranges, you will find sculpture in all media, collectible folk art, Naïf art, Indian art, graphics, unusual masks, glass art, special pottery, and art jewelry.
There have been articles in Arizona and Colorado newspapers about our seasonal Art Walks, comparing us to Santa Fe and other art-oriented US cities. Many of the galleries are open year-round, so while walking around Old Town stop in at any gallery and pick up a copy of the Art Walk map. This map will direct you to galleries that feature creations from some of Mexico's top artists.
We hope that all of you who read this will encourage your friends who plan trips to Vallarta to get off of the beaten path and explore the galleries and unique handcraft shops to be found here. Once you discover these distinctive shops, you will agree that Puerto Vallarta is a major art and cultural center on Mexico's west coast. |
