Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa
Beijing - Direct air service between Mexico and China may begin in March or April 2008, Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Relations Patricia Espinosa Cantellano said on Friday.

She told reporters at the Mexican Embassy that Mexico's Aeromexico has indicated an intention to start such services. She gave no further details.

The flights, which Espinosa said would connect Mexico City and Shanghai, would be the first direct air link between China and Latin America.

Espinosa said Mexico and China have long discussed the possibility of such services and she welcomed the opportunity for the flights.

As to energy cooperation, Espinosa said energy had not been on the agenda during this visit.

But she added that Mexico was ready to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation with China, including energy cooperation. She said the two countries would discuss energy cooperation at the third meeting of their bilateral standing committee.

On trade, Espinosa said Mexico had a large trade deficit with China, but Mexico would continue cooperation to strengthen trade relations.

Espinosa confirmed that Mexico will attend the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. She also expressed thanks for China's aid to victims of recent floods in Mexico.

Espinosa is on a four-day official visit to China as a guest of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. She held talks with Yang and met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday.
