Mexico City - According to Eduardo Sánchez, spokesman for the Mexican Government, Riviera Maya, Acapulco and Baja California have been chosen as tentative locations for the creation of Las Vegas-type casinos.

In an attempt to help curve the amount of urban casino establishments in Mexico's cities, the Interior Secretariat (SEGOB) has confirmed a project that will see these types of establishments built outside city centers.

Marcela González Salas, director of Gaming Commission of the Interior Secretariat, said the project is waiting on permission of local and federal authorities to begin constructing the casinos. There are currently 297 licensed casinos operating in urban areas around Mexico.

Based on the number of previously issued licenses, once legal permission is granted, it's estimated that 775 casinos could be built in the resort areas.

"Despite the expected number of casinos, it is not yet clear whether investors are interested in the project proposed by the Interior Ministry," said González Salas.
