| Lic. Cesar Macias, Puerto Vallarta Director of Sports throws the ceremonial first pitch to launch the Little League season as League President Miguel Angel Vargas looks on. | The following 30 minutes at the stadium should have been filmed and kept in an archive. All of the Little League players arrived and were given their brand new uniforms, the City of Puerto Vallarta brought out the sound system and Lic. Cesar David Macias, the Director General of Sports for Puerto Vallarta arrived.
At the same time the Marine Band arrived in two trucks and marched out onto the field. Moments later, looking down the third base line came all 10 teams, one at a time, neatly and proudly dressed in their new uniforms. They filed and entered the infield area one team at a time as music from the sound system filled the air.
Cesar Macias gave a short speech to welcome the league to Puerto Vallarta and Miguel was handed the microphone and he thanked all involved for participating; from the players, coaches, sponsors, donors, the City and anyone he could think of. Then the Marine Band played the Mexican National Anthem with all the kids on the field standing at attention in respect. Lic. Macias threw out the ceremonial first pitch and it was time to "PLAY BALL!"
The large field had the 12-14 year olds playing and the small field in the left field corner had the 9-11 year old kids competing. There was quite a big crowd that gravitated out to watch the young kids after a few innings. The play was good, the coaches did well and the umpires were professional and called a good game. Of course there is plenty of room for improvement and that will naturally evolve.
The ten teams came mostly from schools that couldn't afford to play baseball along with kids from the Puerto Vallarta area that had shown interest in playing baseball. The jerseys had no names on the front; those will be screened on in the following weeks as sponsors claim the team that they want and they will name the team. The back of the jerseys says "Liga Pequeña de Baseball" on top, Puerto Vallarta on the bottom and are numbered 1-15, and they sure look good.
We want to acknowledge our sponsors and donors. We don't have all ten teams sponsored yet, but six businesses and individuals have stepped up and taken on the sponsorship of one team each at the cost of $10,000 pesos. Others have donated from $500 to $2000 pesos and with every peso donated to this non-profit league, all of this has become possible. We will be writing about each sponsor as the season continues, but will mention briefly how each sponsor came on board.
Of course, BanderasNews.com was the first sponsor, since we took this league on as a BanderasNews Team project after receiving numerous emails from the north from people asking what they can do to help. We will be covering the full season on our website and have dedicated a section to the Little League because we believe in its importance to Puerto Vallarta's kids, families and community.
